Padmavati saved again; See how this last-minute intervention to stop release was stymied
Ahead of the release of the controversial movie, Padmaavat, Supreme Court has refused to give an urgent hearing to a plea filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma, which sought deletion of certain scenes from the film. However, much to the filmmakers concern, the Court is about to hear the matter on Monday. The movie is set to be released on 25th January. Yesterday, Supreme Court had rejected the pleas filed by Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh seeking modification of its January 18th order that allowed the nationwide release of the controversial film and had also warned the protestors to abide by the court’s order. The court had also observed that modifying the order will boast those people who make a virtue of creating trouble. “We will not modify our order. Otherwise, these people who are taking to the streets will make a virtue of creating trouble. They will first create trouble and then make a virtue of it.”
“It is unthinkable that 100-200 people can take to the streets to ban a movie. They should better abide by our order. It is the obligation of state government to maintain law and order,” a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra said. The bench compromising of Justice A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud had also rejected all the other pleas including Karni Sena, which has been staging a protest against the movie for a long time. Meanwhile, various incidents took place on Tuesday at outside Ahmedabad’s Himalaya Mall, with shops being vandalised and vehicles being torched in protest against the movie. Incidents had taken place at 3-4 locations simultaneously. However, the police managed to stop protesters from entering multiplexes and malls.
The movie Padmaavat, initially named as Padmavati, has attracted a lot of controversy over the role of Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji, leading to the movie’s name change. The movie, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in pivotal roles, is based on a historic 13th-century battle, which took place between Maharaja Ratan Singh of Mewar and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi.
