SC Refuses Urgent Hearing on Plea Seeking Deletion of Certain Scenes From Padmaavat

New Delhi, January 24: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to give an urgent hearing to a plea filed by a lawyer over the upcoming Bollywood film Padmavati. Lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma has sought deletion of certain scenes from the film. The court has scheduled the hearing on the matter for January 29, Monday.
The apex court had on January 18 paved the way for the release of the movie nationwide on January 29 by staying the ban on the film in Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Notwithstanding the court’s order, incidents of violence have been reported ahead of the screening of the movie from Gujarat, Noida, Gurugram, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh.
The top court had on Tuesday refused to modify its earlier order which had cleared the decks for the nationwide release of ‘Padmaavat’, saying people must understand that orders of the top court have to be “abided with”. The court rejected pleas filed by Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh seeking modification in its January 18 order.
The bench had also dismissed the applications filed by Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, which has been staging the protest in several states against the release of the movie, and Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha, seeking to stall the exhibition of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie. The film, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles, is based on the saga of a historic 13th century battle between Maharaja Ratan Singh and his army of Mewar and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi.
